As I wrote in a previous blog, the subject of war keeps coming forth in all of my classes, including this one. I've noticed such an enormous aspect is the involvement of technology and how it has enhanced and hindered (depending on your point of view) warfare and its effects on society. -- Military weapons, political correspondence , media advances allowing society to be more aware, the response by society.

This text deals a lot with the resposibility of the media in coverage of news events. Chapters 2 and 3 will be of particular interest in regards to establishing the growth of cross border media and the effect it can have on society.

Search Engines
The first search engine I ever used was 'Alta Vista' www.altavista.com It was actually the first contact I had with the internet. To be honest, for years after that, I had no idea there was any other option than Alta Vista. It was explained to me that it was a web service dedicated to narrowing your key word search into a list of helpful websites. This it did. I put in 'dog' and 301million possibilites were listed, the first being www.dogflat.com The order they are listed is a culmination of relevence to the key word/s, sponsorship to the search engine and after this, alphabetical order. The more specific your key words are, the greater the list is narrowed and the easier your search becomes.
I have to say, I am a google addict www.google.com . It's not to say that it is more superior to its counterparts, I've just used it so much it's second nature. After the alta vista spurt, I kept hearing about people being 'Googled' (that is, using their name as the key words and see the results). I tried it (to discover I am also a male eleven year old ADHD sufferer...) and stuck with it ever since. I was told Google had a much broader search sphere, but I couldn't really say there's a great deal of difference. Type 'dog' into Google and you get 262million sites. This could be considered negative and positive. While the actual sites aren't as vast (being the negative) this may mean that the process of narrowing down relevence to your subject is greater, the first option for Google under 'dog' is www.dog.com
Google has had some bad press over the last couple of weeks, so they are up to some damage control. The latest in news about this (in their own words) 'technology giant' visit www.tech.monstersandcritics.com/news/article_1305740_php/Google_reinvents_search_with_universal_launch

Scavenger Hunt
Using a bit of Altavista and a some guessing I found...
1. The heaviest pumpkin in the world is 1,502 pounds. www.funnystuff.com
2. The quickest and most efficient way to contact Grant Hackett is through www.bigpondsport.com. They have a system set up, hero message, where you are able to send any member of the Australian Swim Team a text, picture or video message - 0428 MY HERO (694376). You can also send an email from their website, but the mobile message seems to be the fastest - you receive confirmation immediately on your phone, no need to check email.
3. The average length of a giraffe's tongue is about 18inches. www.giraffes.com link- physical characteristics.
4. The study of metaphysical concepts. Looks into the elements of existance, such as time, space and matter. Scientific analysis gains greater understanding of their distinctions and meaning.
5. David Cronenberg's first feature film was 'The Brood' in 1979. www.atomiccinema.com/main_director_genre.htm
6. 'The Hacker Manifesto' was first published on January 8th, 1986. www.mithral.com/~beberg/manifesto.html
7. American television shows use the prefix 555 at the beginning of phone numbers because it didn't exsist as a number. Phone companies encouraged the use of 555 to avoid accidental use of a real number (In 'Bruce Almighty' they didn't do this, so many viewers called the number asking for God. The owners were unimpressed.) It started in the 1970's, since then there have been legitimate numbers beginning with the three digits, so it is now about changing the proceeding numbers. As it is relatively new, there are still many combinations that remain fake.
