7. American television shows use the prefix 555 at the beginning of phone numbers because it didn't exsist as a number. Phone companies encouraged the use of 555 to avoid accidental use of a real number (In 'Bruce Almighty' they didn't do this, so many viewers called the number asking for God. The owners were unimpressed.) It started in the 1970's, since then there have been legitimate numbers beginning with the three digits, so it is now about changing the proceeding numbers. As it is relatively new, there are still many combinations that remain fake.
